Making baskets is a natural adjunct to market gardening, and a good off-season enterprise for gardeners. Basketry is the oldest of crafts, predating weaving and pottery making; it was the way our ancestors collected, transported, and stored food. Baskets still serve this purpose and many others; they are an attractive means of keeping things together.
Some of my baskets are meant to carry a load while others are mainly decorative; all are constructed to last a long time. These are not "cookie cutter" baskets; each is unique. Baskets are made from ratan (reed) and hardwood and are usually finished with a coat of lemon oil. Colored reed may be used to emphasize the design created by the weaving. I also make and sell baskets from hard shell gourds grown in my fields.
Here are baskets showing various twill weave patterns and egg baskets, one with eggs from our "girls".
(All baskets shown in this phote have been sold.)
